Buffer Zone Regulations and Alternatives to Pre-plant Soil Fumigation: Using Steam in California Strawberry Production
نویسندگان
چکیده
The number of regulations regarding pre-plant soil fumigation is increasing. Buffer zones are required for methyl bromide and chloropicrin applica tions. Choosing application blocks, methods, and rates to maximize pro fits is becoming a difficult challenge for growers. One consideration is the management of the buffer zone. We consider the costs and returns of using steam for pre-plant soil disinfestation in a non-fumigated buffer zone.

Non-chemical Alternatives Used in the Usa on Horticultural Crops
A variety of non-chemical alternatives to methyl bromide (MB) fumigation of soil for horticultural crop production have been researched in the USA. Non-chemical alternatives are highly desirable but difficult to implement to reproduce the benefits normally obtained by preplant fumigation of soil in strawberry production. Production of pathogen-free, high-quality planting materials using steam a...
متن کاملWhat to Consider when Emission Reduction is Required from Soil Fumigation
Emission is one of the key factors affecting fumigant use in California due to regulations. Many commodities depend on pre-plant soil fumigation to achieve profitable yield and healthy crops. The phase-out of methyl bromide as a broad-spectrum soil fumigant in pest control has placed formidable challenges in searching alternatives. Most alternatives registered today are highly regulated because...
متن کاملEnzyme activities in agricultural soils fumigated with methyl bromide alternatives
Pre-plant fumigation of agricultural soils with a combination of methyl bromide (MeBr) and chloropicrin (CP) to control nematodes, soilborne pathogens and weeds has been a common practice in strawberry (Fragaria X ananassa Duchesne) production since the 1960s. MeBr will be phased out by 2005, but little is known about the impacts of alternative fumigants on soil microbial processes. We investig...
متن کاملApplication of alternative fumigants through drip irrigation systems.
ABSTRACT Strawberry fields in California (9,500 ha annually) are pre-plant fumigated with methyl bromide and chloropicrin to prevent serious soil pest and disease problems. Although soil fumigation with methyl bromide has ensured stability of strawberry production, its use is being discontinued because of its effect on stratospheric ozone. The likely short-term alternatives such as 1,3-dichloro...
متن کاملStrawberry Root Rot and the Recovery of Pythium and Rhizoctonia Spp
One root disease complex often associated with strawberry plants grown in nonfumigated soil is referred to as black root rot. While not currently a widespread problem in properly fumigated commercial production fields, with the impending phase out of the use of methyl bromide and alteration of current fumigation practices this disease complex may once again become a problem. In other strawberry...
